Calcutta is considered the birthplace of Freemasonry in India, with the first Provincial Grand Lodge being established there in 1729 under the Grand Lodge of England. This was shortly after the modern form of Freemasonry was founded in London in 1717. On 27th December 1728, George Pomfret was authorised by Most Worshipful, the Grand Master, Lord Kinston, to introduce Freemasonry into Bengal in Calcutta.
